Breaking of Bread Guidelines

The servers for preparing and serving the Breaking of Bread are arranged by Mike & Maureen, so you do not need to organise this yourself.

Breaking of Bread should take no longer than 15 minutes. Normally, it takes 10 minutes to serve the people. This leaves you 5 minutes to share a simple thought.

You will be called up by the person leading the meeting to lead through the Breaking of Bread at the appropriate time. The person leading the Breaking of Bread can either read from 1 Corinthians 11:23–32 (below) or share a simple thought. Please remember that we are trying to help people to focus on what Jesus has done.

1 Corinthians 11:23–32, NKJV

23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me." 25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. 30 For this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep. 31 For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

Serving the Bread & Wine

The person leading the Breaking of Bread will normally ask the servers to come up to serve. This can be done before or after the leader has shared their Scripture or thought about the Breaking of Bread. (This thought should take no longer than 5 minutes.)

If you are not taking the covers off the table yourself, you can ask the servers to prepare the table for you.

We usually serve the servers the bread and wine before we serve the congregation. This means that the leader will serve first the bread and then the wine to the servers before the congregation is served. Once the servers have received the bread and wine themselves, you can give each server a plate of bread, and they will go and serve the congregation.

There is one tray with bread and wine on it which goes upstairs to the balcony. The server who goes upstairs will know, and you can pass that tray to them once you have passed the plates with bread out to the other servers.

Once all the servers have returned from serving the bread, you can give them each a tray of wine, and they will serve the congregation.

Please remember that if people are sitting on the platform, they also need to be served. The servers should take care of this but might need reminding if they forget and miss out the platform.

At the end of the Breaking of Bread, the servers will automatically place the coverings back on the table, so you do not need to worry about that. When all the bread plates and wine trays are back on the communion table, you are finished and can sit down.
